Wei Deng
A/Prof Wei Deng is Head of cancer nanotechnology lab at the School of Biomedical Engineering, UTS. Her pioneering transdisciplinary research spans nanotechnology, gene engineering and biomedical research to create new technologies for drug/gene delivery. Deng’s most impressive innovation to date is to merged two existing clinical techniques, X-ray radiation and photodynamic therapy (PDT), to create X-ray triggered PDT, a groundbreaking treatment method for rectal cancer. This is a game-changing development that offers hope to rectal cancer patients who have exhausted conventional treatment options. She is currently focusing on translating her research into clinical applications by collaborating with clinicians, trial sites and industry partners. Deng also has pioneered a new generation of liposome formulation for in vivo CRISPR delivery, which holds great promise for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. This could potentially improve the lives of millions of people around the world who suffer from this debilitating condition.
